Onshore–offshore correlation of central Lake Erie glacial deposits

چکیده

Dive observations, echogram transects, core sampling, and a seismic profile revealed that the lake bed of north-central Lake Erie is an extensive terrace cut by storm waves currents. The erosional unconformity on which Late Wisconsinan (Port Bruce Mackinaw) glacial units crop out. Beds massive diamictons, glaciolacustrine sediments containing parallel reflections, out alternately from west to east, resulting oscillatory ice retreat. These beds correlate with Port Stanley Drift phase) Wentworth (Mackinaw exposed in nearby shore bluffs onshore moraines. glacier earlier readvances formed tongues shelves central basin. Nutrient - Primary Production Relationships in Central Lake Erie: A Simple Correlation Approach

GLOOSCIIENFVO, w. A. Nutrient-primary production relationships in central Lake Erie: A simple correlation approach. Ohio J. Sci. 75(5): 251, 1975. Correlation coefficients were determined between primary production, phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll a, temperature, and forms of N, P, and Si in Lake Erie during 10 cruises between April and December, 1970. The Central Basin was emphasized due ...

Internal loading of phosphate in Lake Erie Central Basin.

After significant reductions in external phosphorus (P) loads, and subsequent water quality improvements in the early 1980s, the water quality of Lake Erie has declined considerably over the past decade. The frequency and magnitude of harmful algal blooms (primarily in the western basin) and the extent of hypoxic bottom waters in the central basin have increased. The decline in ecosystem health...

Risk-benefit of consuming Lake Erie fish.

BACKGROUND Consumption of fish is promoted as a healthy way to obtain essential fatty acids (EFA) in the diet, yet the risk of ingesting harmful contaminants remains a concern. A recent study concluded that the risk-benefit of consuming fish from the North American Laurentian Great Lakes, which sustain important commercial and recreational fisheries, is currently unclear. We report the fatty ac...

Extensive Deposits on the Pacific Plate from Late Pleistocene North American Glacial Lake Outbursts

One of the major unresolved issues of the Late Pleistocene catastrophic-flood events in the northwestern United States (e.g., from glacial Lake Missoula) has been what happened when the flood discharge reached the ocean. This study compiles available 3.5-kHz high-resolution and airgun seismic reflection data, long-range sidescan sonar images, and sediment core data to define the distribution of...

Ohio Lake Erie Protection Fund Final Report

Bacteria exhibit the ability to metabolize a wide array of contaminants and, as a result, reduce their toxicity to wildlife and humans. The general goal of this project was to design and evaluate, as a proof-of concept, a DNA microarray assay to evaluate bacterial detoxification mechanisms in contaminated sediments. The assay consists of 100 probes that measure activity of bacterial remediation...
